To implement one of the contents of Decision No. 1266/QD-TTg by the Prime Minister, approving the Vietnam Building Materials Development Strategy for the period 2021-2030, with a vision toward 2050, Vietnam Institute for Building Materials (VIBM) has partnered with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Vietnam) to organize the conference “Material Solutions for Sustainable Development in the Construction Industry” on November 29th in Ho Chi Minh City.

Dr. Nguyen Quang Hiep – President of VIBM delivered the opening speech at the conference.
Developing a green economy and an environmentally friendly circular economy is one of the major policies of the Communist Party and the State of Vietnam during the period of industrialization and modernization of the country. To date, policies related to the development of the building materials industry with the goal of sustainable development, green development, and environmental protection in the production of building materials have been implemented and achieved good results, such as: the treatment and use of fly ash, slag, and gypsum from thermal power plants, chemical factories, and fertilizer plants as raw materials for building materials production; utilizing excess heat from cement production plants to generate electricity, etc.
At the same time, in recent years, the Ministry of Construction has directed, commissioned, and allocated funds to research institutes, universities, organizations, and individuals to study scientific topics related to the development of building materials that save mineral resources, conserve energy, are environmentally friendly, and use waste materials. Many research projects aimed at recycling industrial waste such as ash, slag, and construction waste have been successfully completed with high value and application potential. Therefore, this conference is also an opportunity to publish and discuss these research topics.
The conference will be attended by: Dr. Nguyen Quang Hiep – President of VIBM, Ministry of Construction; Mr. Le Van Ke – Deputy Director of the Building Materials Department, Ministry of Construction; Mr. Nguyen Cong Thinh – Deputy Director of the Department of Science, Technology, and Environment, Ministry of Construction; Mr. Marc Goichot – Program Leader of the Freshwater Program, WWF Asia Pacific; Mr. Huynh Quoc Tinh – Director of the Sustainable Food Program, WWF-Vietnam; Mr. Ha Huy Anh – National Project Manager for Sustainable Sand Management in the Mekong Delta, WWF-Vietnam; Ms. Phan Thu Hang – Chairwoman of the Vietnam Green Building Council; Mr. Douglas L. Snyder – Executive Director of the Vietnam Green Building Council.

Mr. Le Van Ke – Deputy Director of the Building Materials Department delivered a speech at the conference.
The event also brought together over 120 guests, including representatives from various departments, industries, businesses, professional associations, construction and supervision units, universities, colleges, research institutes, experts, architects, and others from the construction field.
As part of the program, the speakers introduced Vietnam’s strategy and orientation for the sustainable development of building materials, including circular economy, low carbon emissions, and shared research results promoting the use of materials, as well as alternative solutions such as using crushed sand, construction demolition waste, dredged sludge, etc., to save natural resources and protect the environment in the construction sector.
This event also provided an opportunity for production and construction units to come together and seek out and implement solutions to strengthen sustainable development, green development, and environmental protection in building materials production.
